The Billings Family
- At Sloan UMC, Family Ministries work to develop and nurture a ministry for all types of families, striving to guide, nurture, and support all people as they grow as Christian disciples.
- Family Ministries understand that the home is a setting for spiritual formation, and provide relevant and intentional ministry for all families through the church and in the community.
- Family Ministries addresses basic human needs as well as provide opportunities for faith formation, service, and witness. They work to provide family members opportunities to grow in their relationship with God and respond to that relationship faithfully in the church and the world.
BACK TO SCHOOL SUNDAY
“A Sunday of Blessings”
“Back to School Sunday” at Sloan Memorial UMC
The children and youth of Sloan Memorial UMC were celebrated and challenged as they prepared for the start of the new school year. The music, prayers, children’s moments presentation, and Gospel message all focused on the need for our students, parents, teachers, community volunteers – EVERYONE – to be “dressed for battle” with the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18). Activity packets were also prepared via the work area on Christian Education for the children/youth with lessons and activities on “the whole armor of God”.
Following special altar prayers for the children/youth and their parents, special blessings were spoken over the backpacks and school supplies. Backpacks and school supplies were also made available to the Vacation Bibles School participants from Wesley UMC and Kennedy Place Housing Residence (partners in ministry/mission with Sloan UMC).
Prayer for a New School Year
Sustainer of us all, help us to grow in your wisdom and in your ways. Remind us that your truth sets us free to learn and to love. Grant that during this academic year each student and each teacher may devote themselves to their studies and share what they have learned from others. By your Spirit of Wisdom, keep us open to your Word and ways. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
